The Studio as an Instrument TUTORiAL

FANTASTiC | 08 Oct 2018 | 265 MB

Classic techniques based on tape editing, effects processing & audio routing.

Some of the most original and creative sounds were born out of mistakes and what could be considered the limitations of musician’s hardware and software. Working with a basic set of techniques and tools requires you to think more about all stages of the process. This course is focused on the concept of the Studio as an Instrument – explore classic techniques based on tape editing, effects processing and audio routing. Techniques like these have created iconic sounds and shaped our modern hardware and software solutions. Studying these classic techniques will give you a better understanding of how modern tools work and more importantly further inspire you to create and innovate your own sound by experimenting with the tools you have at your disposal in your own studio.

COURSE OVERVIEW
In this course we will explore the concept of the Studio as an Instrument. The recording studio as we know it today has been evolving since the mid 20th century. Throughout its development there have been many engineers, producers, composers and artists working in genres from musique concrete, to dub, to pop that have used the mixing console, routing possibilities and processing environment to function as an instrument. Discover classic techniques from the 50s, 60s & 70s based around tape editing, effects processing and audio routing. These came from experiments from the musique concrete studios in France to the Reggae and Dub Studios in Jamaica. Combining their technology to function as a single instrument has had a great influence on modern music production. Although demonstrated with Ableton the techniques so that they can be applied no matter what DAW you use.

Watch, Listen and Learn – our easy to follow video instruction introduce you to classic techniques and technical insights
•6 walkthrough videos each demonstrating different concepts of using the Studio as an instrument

► Varispeed concepts
► Musical Applications of varispeed
► Reverse effects; Pre-verb & Amplitude Modulation
► Tape Loops + Wow & Flutter
► Ring & Frequency Modulation & Comb filtering

A stereo plate reverb plug-in capable of a rich variety of effects, with intuitive controls and efficient use of CPU and system resources. The RVB500 plug-in algorithmically emulates a mechanical plate reverb, still regarded as a mainstay of many recording studios, for a diverse range of effects including drum enhancement or vocal ambience – while complementing more complex or resource intensive convolution models. Economical with system resources, the RVB500 is ideal for classic reverb effects while still leaving sufficient power available for the most complex audio workstation projects. Intuitive controls including a sub-sample resolution pre-delay, variable time and damping, coupled with virtual reverb plate transducer amplifiers for enhanced harmonic drive at high levels and a Wet-only switch, for use on a dedicated reverb buss, enable a wide variety of processing options.

The effortless control and uniquely musical character of one of the best-known vintage compressor / limiters. Inspired by the legendary smooth, effortless dynamic control and uniquely musical character of the classic Fairchild 670 limiter, the FC70 tames dynamics without robbing the mix of power and detail. The FC70 uses state of the art processing to emulate a fully balanced transformer-coupled signal path, combined with an innovative delay-free feedback algorithm which accurately mirrors equivalent analogue behaviour. In addition, the sidechain includes fast attack and program dependent release settings, combined with Lateral / Vertical, Independent and Linked stereo channel modes.

A natural sounding, versatile, analogue filter modelled EQ, economical with CPU and system resources. Digital EQ no longer has to sound digital. The EQ500 plug-in emulates all the desirable qualities of a professional analogue channel equalizer, while the elegantly simple design makes adding texture and colour – or taming problem frequencies – both intuitive and instinctive. Styled as a virtual 500-series module, the EQ500 uses innovative analogue filter modelling to open up the response and accurately replicate the more natural sound of analogue designs, without additional latency or high CPU demand. More efficient use of CPU and system resources allows more plug-in instances in a typical audio workstation project.

A flexible, console grade channel compressor with analogue warmth and character. The DYN500 plug-in emulates all the desirable qualities of a professional analogue channel compressor, taming dynamics without restricting the natural character of a mix or performance. Styled as a virtual 500-series module, the DYN500 provides soft-knee compression coupled with a gentle tape-saturation overdrive for warmth and character at high signal levels. Just like the best analogue gear, the harder you hit it, the better it sounds. Designed as a ‘one in every channel’ compressor / dynamics plug-in, the DYN500 can be used in mono or stereo channels, delivering professional console grade processing, with efficient use of CPU and system resources.
