Ryan Gosling holds his own admirably in this film alongside the iconic Anthony Hopkins and ever-watchable David Strathairn and Rosamunde Pike. The relationship between the two characters, Ted Crawford (Hopkins) and Willy Beachum (Gosling) is in some ways similar to the one between the clever but resentful ex-cop intent on revenge and the smart and determined young officer in the movie Speed, if you know it, as they try to outmanoeuvre each other - to explain more might spoil the compelling progress of this murder case. What I enjoyed most about it, however, is how the young and talented lawyer, Beachum, learns just in time from his involvement with the vengeful old master that being a winner doesn't have to mean earning the biggest paychecks.

Apart from Mr Hopkin's apparent "Scottish" accent, this was a well crafted piece altogether. With a weaponless murder as its legal core, and performances of a high standard from all present. Pike had little to do to justify her supporting role, although she as usual did it well enough. She's an actress who happens to be a pretty girl rather than the reverse - which is far commoner. Gosling was a bit lightweight for this fairly heavy role, but he was protraying a young gun just starting to climb to early stratospheric legal heights after a strong showing as an assistant DA.
While knowing that justice had to be served, the puzzle presented was just how that could be brought about, until the cracking of the nut was nicely presented in a way sharp enough to blunt Mr Hopkin's self assured arrogance.
A film of performances rather than action - thank goodness for onesuch in the seemingly endless lists of Spidermen and Iron Men and assorted superhero flicks, few of which make any great demands on the cast - (and in some cases that's just as well...)

A Ryan Gosling Showreel.
Rosamund Pike does a good accent.
Hopkins does Hopkins.
Some nice cars.
Apple product placement.
Anxious faces.
The twist in the tail is that I watched the whole thing.
